EFL teachers are strongly motivated to gain more qualifications and progress in their careers - Evocation’s teacher survey reveals
Evocation EFL carried out a survey by email in November 2011. We carry out these surveys from time to time to stay in touch with what our teachers are thinking. The survey went to over 70 teachers with whom Evocation was in active or recent contact at the time. We had an 18% response rate which is reasonable for a survey of this kind. Of those responding, 8% were aged under 25, 38% were in the age range 25-34, 31% in the range 35-44, and 23% were 45 and older. 54% were male, 46% female.
85% were either taking, or are intending to take, additional qualifications. These included three people aiming for a DELTA and others aiming for a Master’s, although not EFL-related.
More than half hold a CRB check, although EFL work does not generally require one.
About a third of teachers are interested in working abroad; another third are not interested, with a final third unsure.
Where will they be in 10 years’ time? Half say they will still be working in EFL, but a third are unsure. Around a third are interested in progressing to senior posts such as ADoS and DoS. And a third also say they could be interested in teacher training as a career direction.
Nearly half say they have used interactive whiteboards but only a quarter say they have used Promethean technology.
The average rate earned from any teaching over the last year was £13.27. This is very close to Evocation EFL’s main rate. However this average was made up of rates ranging from £10-25/hour.
Many schools were mentioned by teachers as being their favourites, but Frances King was mentioned by 3 teachers and LSI by 4 teachers.
